Water restrictions are stretching into 2027. Sarasota Memorial is securing land for a possible future Manatee County campus. And the Rays have locked up the American League East with October baseball returning to Tropicana Field.

Tampa’s once-a-week watering rules now run through March

A. WHAT HAPPENED

The City of Tampa says the regional Modified Phase III water restrictions have been extended through March 31, 2027.

For Tampa Water Department customers, that means lawn irrigation remains limited to once a week on the assigned watering day.

B. THE DETAILS

The region is carrying a 12-month rainfall deficit of 15.4 inches, with severe or extreme drought conditions still affecting many communities.

Tampa customers may water only during two windows: midnight to 4 a.m. or 8 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. The correct day depends on the service address.

The city also offers free irrigation evaluations, leak-detection help and water-saving devices. A compost and mulch giveaway is planned for October 23 and 24, with fuller event details still to come.

C. WHY IT MATTERS

This is not a short extension measured in days or weeks. It pushes mandatory conservation through the dry season and affects how homeowners, property managers and landscape crews schedule irrigation.

The larger point is regional. A rainfall deficit does not stop at a city boundary, so customers should follow the rules of their own utility rather than assuming one schedule applies everywhere.

The headline is the March deadline, but the practical story is simpler: know your watering day, use the allowed window and fix avoidable leaks now.

Conservation works best when the rules are easy to follow. The city’s free evaluations and devices are useful only if residents know they exist.

Sarasota Memorial is securing land for a future Manatee campus

A. WHAT HAPPENED

Sarasota Memorial’s public hospital board approved a nearly $60 million agreement to acquire about 120 acres near State Road 64 and Interstate 75.

B. THE DETAILS

The transaction is approved but not closed. It remains contingent on due diligence, environmental review and a viable rezoning and development path.

The larger tract sits near a separate 10-acre parcel approved in July for $8.4 million, with up to $9 million authorized for closing costs. Sarasota Memorial has identified a freestanding emergency department as the first phase for that smaller parcel.

Outpatient buildings and a full hospital are possibilities, not approved construction projects.

C. WHY IT MATTERS

Healthcare infrastructure is following east Manatee’s growth. Sarasota Memorial says Manatee residents represented about one-quarter of its patients in 2025, while nearly 3,500 employees live in the county.

Securing land now gives the public health system options along a fast-growing corridor.

D. MY TAKE

The important milestone is the land strategy, not a hospital groundbreaking.

The next proof points are closing, zoning, a defined campus plan, funding, permits and a construction schedule.

The Rays won the AL East. The postseason starts at home.

A. WHAT HAPPENED

The Tampa Bay Rays clinched the 2026 American League East title, their fifth division championship and first since 2021.

The club also secured the No. 1 seed in the American League postseason field.

B. THE DETAILS

Tampa Bay was 96-61 when the division was clinched.

The Rays are scheduled to open the American League Division Series at Tropicana Field on Saturday, October 3. MLB says Tampa Bay will face the winner of the Yankees-Red Sox Wild Card Series. The opponent and game time remain unsettled until that series is complete.

C. WHY IT MATTERS

A division title brings the postseason back to St. Petersburg and gives the Rays the league’s strongest opening position.

It also creates a high-attention weekend for the businesses, transportation systems and neighborhoods around Tropicana Field.

D. MY TAKE

The division title is the milestone. The next story is whether the Rays can turn the league’s top seed into a deep October run.

For fans, the smart move is to follow the Yankees-Red Sox Wild Card Series, then wait for MLB’s official opponent and game-time confirmation before locking in a full plan.

 04 / DEVELOPMENT BRIEFS 

Development Briefs

Pinellas adopted a mobile-home safety net, but did not fund it. Pinellas County added a manufactured-housing strategy to its housing plan. The framework could support relocation after a mobile-home park closure, up to six months of lot-rent assistance and emergency repairs. County staff recommended no allocation now, so this is an approved policy tool, not an open funded benefit.

Tampa Water is temporarily using chlorine. Through October 5, Tampa Water is using chlorine instead of monochloramine in its treatment process. The city says the water remains safe to drink and use, though some customers may notice a stronger taste or smell. Running the tap, letting a pitcher sit or using a carbon filter may reduce the effect.

Pinellas reinforces its ban on large-scale data centers. Pinellas County commissioners adopted a resolution making the county’s existing prohibition on standalone, large-scale data centers explicit in unincorporated areas. The county cited limited developable land plus potential electricity, water, heat and noise impacts. Data systems that support otherwise permitted uses, such as hospitals or universities, remain distinguishable from standalone facilities.

Red Side Departures still has a temporary detour. Tampa International Airport’s live guide still directs Red Side drop-offs to the Red Express departures lanes during road resurfacing. Travelers should verify the route on the day of travel because the airport has not published a reopening time.

Dengue response now includes new treatment windows and free tire disposal. Hillsborough and Pinellas counties each declared a local emergency September 24. Hillsborough scheduled adult-mosquito treatment overnight September 28 in East Lake, East Tampa, Seminole Heights and Forest Hills, with daytime larvicide work planned in East Lake, Riverview and Bloomingdale through October 3 if conditions allow. Pinellas residents may dispose of up to four qualifying tires free through October 30 to remove mosquito-breeding sites. The latest county release cites 179 locally acquired cases across Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco, not 179 cases in one county.

Hillsborough’s small-business program reached 1,100 registrations. Hillsborough County says 1,100 businesses are now registered for its Small Business Enterprise program, which provides access to county procurement opportunities, education, training and networking. Registration is free and valid for three years, but the milestone does not represent contracts awarded or revenue won.
