A West Tampa storefront gets a fresh start

A Main Street building moves toward reuse, downtown access changes, and three ways to spend the weekend.

REAL TAMPA BAY // OCTOBER 21, 2026 // DEVELOPMENT DESK

BY TAYLOR GANGIS

With all the back-and-forth around the Rays’ future, the team did what it needed to do on the field. Now they’re headed to the World Series. There’s a lesson in that for the rest of us: we can take care of our cities and do the things we know need doing, even when the politics make it harder. We don’t have to wait for somebody else to make our neighborhoods better.

STORY 1 // THE NEIGHBORHOOD SIGNAL

A fresh start for a West Tampa storefront

2113 W. Main Street. CITY OF TAMPA.

A. WHAT HAPPENED

Tampa’s Community Redevelopment Agency awarded its first Commercial Design Grant to Marvin Knight for a vacant building at 2113 W. Main Street.

B. THE DETAILS

The 1920 retail building is being prepared for future business tenants. The grant provides professional planning and design services, and Knight is pairing it with the CRA’s exterior and interior improvement programs.

The design program can provide up to $150,000 in services without a matching contribution. The city did not disclose the exact award for this property.

C. WHY IT MATTERS

Getting an empty building ready for a new business starts before the doors open. Design work is one step toward reuse. A future tenant and opening date have not been announced.

These rehabs and redevelopment projects are some of my favorite things happening across the region. Ybor is a good example of holding on to character and history, especially with its old cigar factories. I don’t love clearing farmland when we have places we can repurpose. I know everyone moving here can’t fit in the city, and some sprawl is going to happen. But can we limit the destruction and do more with what’s already here?

Looking ahead, Whispers After Dark is planned for next Wednesday, October 28, from 6–9:30 p.m. We are excited for this one as we kick off all of the Halloween activities inside the neighborhood.

STORY 2 // THE ACCESS SHIFT

Check your downtown route before heading out

NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN AT EAST BROREIN AND SOUTH TAMPA STREETS. CITY OF TAMPA.

A. WHAT HAPPENED

The City of Tampa says the new traffic pattern at East Brorein and South Tampa streets is in place as of October 20.

B. THE DETAILS

The change supports THEA’s South Selmon expansion. Drivers on South Tampa Street are rerouted through a temporary eastbound lane on Brorein to reach South Franklin Street. The pattern is expected to remain for roughly two years.

Separate overnight restriping and the Convention Center garage entrance closure were scheduled for 8 p.m. October 20 through 5 a.m. October 21. Check the latest access notice before using that entrance.

C. WHY IT MATTERS

The city expects heavier downtown traffic and more pedestrians October 22–25, with HYROX and the Joyce Meyer conference among the major events. Allow extra time and check the current route before heading out.

We can take some ownership of how our cities work, too. Taking care of a park or choosing a bike instead of a car when it makes sense are small things, but small changes can have a big impact. We don’t have to wait for somebody else to do everything for us.

STORY 3 // THE ADAPTIVE-REUSE BET

A St. Pete bungalow gets a spooky second life

THE FUTURE MUSEUM OF HAUNTED HISTORY. ST PETE RISING.

A. WHAT HAPPENED

The Museum of Haunted History is planning a soft opening October 23–24, from 6–9 p.m., at 4754 First Avenue North.

B. THE DETAILS

Founder Brandy Stark is converting a 1939 bungalow into a home for historical objects and displays connected to SPIRITS of St. Petersburg’s paranormal investigations.

The organizer has also discussed classes, tours and an artist studio. A fuller opening is tentatively expected in February 2027.

C. WHY IT MATTERS

It is another example of an older building taking on a new use. For visitors, the October dates are a soft opening, not a promise of permanent operating hours. Check admission and access details before going.

This sounds fun. An older St. Pete bungalow getting an unusual next chapter.
